Venue / Boutique

Basswood is lovely. Renovated in 2021, this stately home was transformed into a 5 suite Airbnb right in the heart of Capon Bridge, WV. This was truly a labor of love. The suites are gorgeously appointed and named for some of the native trees of West Virginia: Sassafras, Willow, Redbud, Paw Paw and Sycamore. It has truly become a hallmark of the town and a favorite destination for visitors.

The Appalachian Wedding Chapel & Boutique lives in a few rooms downstairs. With plenty of room for a small indoor wedding (24 guests or so) the “Chapel” is a cozy room with a fireplace and ornately decorated mantle.

The adjoining Boutique is an eclectic collection of local arts, gifts, books, cards, candles, Handfasting cords, bridal bouquets, boutonnieres and other wedding accessories. It is also home to a unique assortment of locally crafted ceremonial items made especially for the Boutique for use in the many Unity Ceremonies we offer.

Carefully curated descriptions of these unity ceremonies accompany the handfasting cords, teapots, and various plates, bowls and drinking vessels made exclusively from local Hampshire County clay. We’re especially proud of  the beautiful handwashing pitchers made by Winterfoot Pottery and the lovely two-spouted wedding vase by the master local potter, Julie Farrar. All our unique accessories make an exquisite addition to any ceremony.

Outdoor ceremonies are especially lovely. Right beside the Cacapon River with Bear Garden Mountain to the east and Shaffenaker Mountain to the west, the views are spectacular. We’re not a large venue (50 guests) but we can accommodate larger groups at several other locations in town.

Oh, and the otters? Yes they’re here too, a pair of them enjoying their own lives in the Cacapon, whose name means medicine or healing waters in the native Shawnee language.

What the otters call each other, the Berrys don’t know, but John and Brenda call them Capon and Shenandoah. Book your wedding at The Appalachian Wedding Chapel & Boutique and book a stay at Basswood, and maybe you’ll see them. Learn more about the Berrys story here.
