To be legally married, couples must obtain a marriage license from a circuit court in the state where the ceremony will take place. Laws vary by state for both couples and officiants. Be certain to check with the clerk of court’s office in the jurisdiction where you are to be married for any specific regulations like waiting periods, residents vs. nonresidents, who can legally perform your wedding, etc.
In our role as officiants, we cannot provide your marriage license. We do, however, as required by law, sign and return your marriage license to the circuit court’s office for you. Once received, a legal copy may be requested from the clerk’s office, usually for a small fee. We provide a bound copy of your ceremony and a certificate of marriage that is suitable for framing, but it is not a legal document.
Brenda Berry is an ordained officiant licensed in Virginia and West Virginia. John Berry is an ordained officiant licensed in Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC. Both are available and able to perform legal marriages in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
