The Wedding Vase

The symbolism of the two spouts of a wedding vase couldn’t be clearer, as cultures all around the world have employed the shared drink from the single vessel of marriage in many ways, and in many different forms.

The Hopi and Pueblo Nations use ceremonial wedding vases like the one pictured here. The two spouts represent two people, now coming together – still as individuals, but sharing one life. The looped handle represents the unity achieved in marriage, and the space created within represents the circle of life. The vessel represents the sharing of a common life.

According to navajocodetalkers.org, the wedding vase is more than a ceremonial item. It is an essential component of the wedding ceremony itself. Its use works to preserve the sanctity of the marriage contract being formed between two people. Filled with “holy water” that might include nectar, tea or purified water, each spouse takes a turn offering a drink and drinking from the vase.

Once the ceremony is over, the wedding vase becomes a representation of the couple’s foundational love together. It becomes a cherished item in the home, with both parties responsible for taking care of it.

The wedding vase designs we carry in our boutique have been made especially for The Appalachian Wedding Chapel and can be personalized with the couple’s names and date of their wedding. Filled with wine, water, tea, or spirit of your choice, it makes for a memorable and meaningful part of the ceremony.
